Post-death

The process of grieving is a natural and emotional response to the loss of someone or something significant in our lives. Dealing with the grief can be extremely challenging and painful.

Recognising whether a grieving process is occurring naturally can be challenging, as each person deals with loss in a unique way. However, there are some common signs and characteristics associated with a natural grieving process, as well as others, which, on the contrary, can serve as warning signs.

Experiencing a wide range of emotions, such as sadness, anger, guilt, nostalgia and/or even moments of joy, when remembering positive experiences with the deceased person, is part of a natural grieving process.

Gradually accepting the reality of the loss, recognising that the deceased person is no longer physically present; developing new routines and find strategies to move forward; choosing to still maintain an emotional and symbolic connection with the loved one while moving towards the future; and/or being able to remember the deceased person without feeling extreme anguish, allowing memories to evolve over time, are normative and adaptative criteria, which are part of a natural grieving process.
